Cinema without Film--Digital Cinematography

The precision and relative simplicity that digital technology offers has finally caught up with the film industry. Many cinematographers and directors have resisted the transition to film-less cameras due to poor low light performance, or a shallow depth of field, in addition to the resentment that digital files did not have the "film look". Digital cinema has made great advances in recent years, with some of the newest cameras offering superior 4K resolutions, solid build quality, and the same features from all standard film cameras, not to mention a competitive price. Furthermore, using digital cinema cameras allows creative minds to record right to disk, bypassing the necessity for rolls and rolls of film and processing costs, which are all time consuming activities. Film-less cameras can have their footage imported directly into the non-linear workstation, for instant editing, especially when that workstation and editing software could be a modern laptop. Attached is a link to the outstanding RED ONE Digital cinema camcorder.

(Editors note: These cost around $17,000, when you include the lens, 4K sensor, body, and other essential parts, and if I had the money I'd buy one in a heart beat!)

  1. Seriouly, you would buy one? $17,000 is a lot of money for a clear picture, don't you think. It will be nice to go to a theater to see a digital movie, but I think it's nice now. I remember the film on reels and them having to switch from one reel to the next during the movie. And if something broken, we sat there and waited. The quality wasn't good, but what did we know back then. We have come a long way since then. I personally do not see any flaws like I did back then. How much better can it actually get?

  2. It looks neat, but I highly doubt most people would spend that much money on a non-essential appliance. I don't think it will sell long term.

  3. While many people may want to have this for personal use..I doubt they will be able to spend the amount of money asked to purchase it. Even if the money come down after a few years...I can not see it comeing down that much.

  4. That is a RIDICULOUS price. There is absolutely no reason for that. It is a very cool gadget and serves its purpose. HOwever, i dont see how it is going to become a popular item on the market due to the insane price.

  5. A good camera is really expensive and im sure there quaility still wouldnt compare to this quality if it really is as good as its suposed to be. I do think 17,000 is an exssesive amout to pay but its really not that bad compared to cameras on the market. I think this is a really good idea and i wish i had one and think it would make edditing easier

  6. wow $17k!! I didnt even spend that much on my car! I could see a photographer investing in one of these, but seriously, how long will it be until a professional photographer is a thing of the past? I am planning my wedding now, and most photographers are hurting for business and will work with you to lower cost or alter packages to get you to book with them! So even they may think twice before investing into something like this.

  7. YES...the point of this is not from a consumer prospective, but from a professional one. This kind of quality and clarity, along with camera control is unheard of. Before, hundreds of thousands of dollars would have to be spent on just the camera itself, not including the costs of film stock, editing, color correction, and distribution. Now all of that can be had for under $50,000 as this camera, combined with an extremely powerful Mac Pro workstation and Final Cut Studio for around $22,000.

  9. I have a friend who is a film major and he bought a camera similar to this one shown. Its an amazing piece of equipment, and he doesnt use it just for personal use. Its used to build his portfolio, shoot commercials, and he has even released a film with a few of his friends that had several showings at the neshaminy mall theater. These cameras are amazing, and with the ability to digitally edit without having to convert saves a ton of time, and helps get through raw footage much faster
