Electric Guitar: Then & Now

In the early 20th century live musical performances for entertainment purposes didn't usually exceed an audience size that required manufactured amplification. Usually "big bands" from the 20s produced enough sound & volume to fill the room & of course orchestras could fill large halls, but the guitar just didn't have the "umph".

It's interesting to see the struggles players went through to make an effective sound. Perhaps t he reason the electric guitar has a rebellious reputation is because ever since its inception it has been undergoing many changes & suffering the influences of innovation to improve it—improvement equals change & change translates to a rebellious attitude.

  1. I am not that familar with the guitar and how it has advanced in the years. Watching this clip gave me a glipse into how differant the earlier guitars were and the differant sounds they make. I also find it interesting how some people still prefer the orginal sound a earlier guitar made what some may hear as being not so clear with the feedback for example some may hear those noices as complimenting the music.

  2. The electric guitar is probably one of the most important musical advancements from an instrument. An acoustic guitar just has a totally different sound and feel than a blaring guitar. The electric guitar has been an important instrument in many music genres since it's invention from Rock to Funk to Metal.

  3. I partially agree with you. Change can translate to a rebellious attitude but it is what it done with the change that makes the difference. Without a doubt Hendrix, Clapton, Townsend, and Santana all have an elite skills for their innovative styles experimenting with amplification and feedback but it was Hendrix that shined the brightest with his "controversial" style.

  5. I was not aware of the history of guitar. I do know that I love that sound it produces. When it comes to rock and roll It can never be to loud. I couldn't't imagine not having the electric guitar, would the greats still be greats?

  6. Some things you never really think about. Electric guitars didn’t just start out being the way they are now? I’m not really into music and stuff, some things I forget have progressed over time. It’s a shame that music didn’t just come easily to musicians and it was actually a struggle for them to do what they enjoyed.

  7. Everytime I think of an electric guitar, it makes me think of Back to the Future. I love the sound it makes when musicians jam out to it. Great invention in my point of view. I like the video too. Still remember the black and white videos lol.

  8. Interesting thought about the"rebellious" reputation of the electric guitar. I think it makes sense. However, rebellious or not, I prefer its sound over the standard acoustic.

  9. The electric guitar is a great instrument. It was neat to see how the guitar has evolved. I never knew that players would get bloody fingers from the strings they originally used.

  10. My buddies dad collects guitars. His collection is over 500k and man there's some awesome guitaars in there. One is only one of 5 in the world and the only one that has lights in side that actually work and blink as you play
