Edison's First Motion Picture

Here is the first footage that Edison ever recorded onto celluloid film. While it is extremely short and simplistic for modern days, this was revolutionary for the time period.

  1. That was pretty funny!! Extremely.. seven seconds! But I am sure it was a huge technological advance for that time!

  2. Fred Ott was a great actor in his day. I think he won an Oscar for this performance. However, not many people know that there was a sequel to this movie called "The Cough."

  3. Funny how a sneeze was the best thing he could of thought of to record and interesting that there was no sound to go along with. Now a days, you can watch video clips in HD on tv and search databases full of videos on the internet with Youtube. It will be cool to see what's next. This year at the superbowl they had the first anamated 3D commercial, if you actually had the glasses to watch it - I predict 3D could be one of the next big steps in motion picture future.

  4. If any of you thought that was basic, Edison had many more basic films that were short in length. Films were typically several seconds long in the 1890's. It was only a couple years later that pieces of film were glued together thus creating the technique of editing and making a film longer and have plot.

  5. It's very interesting to see "how it all began," from what we consider quality to date. Movies are such a big aspect of entertainment for many people. It is definitely a cultural explosion.

  6. We wrote about this in our blog too. I thought it was great that you actually put the video on there. It gives us the information plus a visual to go along with it. It is really hysterical to see how far we have come in technology and filming-thank god!

  8. That's crazy just how revolutionary this has become. I wonder what technologies of our generation people will look back on and say the same things we're saying now...

  9. Motion pictures, has become an entertainment medium like no other. The evolution from moving pictures to a pure art form has been amazing. This was a pretty cool video. How they called the piece a motion picture compared to today’s its funny. For them of course it must have been a huge advancement. Motion picture today has become shorthand for rapid technological change.

  10. The sneeze was a realistic first motion picture. After all, the first words spoken on a telephone were something along the lines of come in here, I need you. Today, all new things seem to come out bursting with something. In a sense, it could be said that earlier inventors were more down to earth. There are two main uses for video: entertainment and security (and evidence). Another use is the video will. This makes the will more personal. In a practical sense, it is also harder to corrupt and easier to retrieve, because digital data can’t truly be deleted so easily.
